FDIGAFidelity Crypto Industry and Digital Payments ETF

STCEASchwab Crypto Thematic ETF

In short

FDIG Crypto exposure through the companies, not the coins: roughly 50 miners, exchanges and digital payments processors, weighted by how heavily they trade rather than how big they are, in a Fidelity-built index priced below the thematic norm.

STCE Crypto exposure without owning a coin. STCE holds about 40 global companies tied to digital assets and blockchain, chosen by Schwab's own index, at a price that undercuts most thematic funds.

Stated mandate

FDIG The fund seeks to track the performance of the Fidelity Crypto Industry and Digital Payments Index before fees and expenses. It normally invests at least 80% of assets in equity securities or depositary receipts included in that index.

STCE The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, an index providing global exposure to companies that may benefit from developing or using cryptocurrencies and other digital assets, or from business activities tied to blockchain and distributed-ledger technology.

Why people hold it

  • FDIG Runs 0.39%, under the 0.56% median for global thematic funds. Cheap real estate in a corner of the market where niche fees usually bite.
  • Weights positions by trading volume rather than market cap, so the largest company in the group is not automatically the largest holding.fidelity.comfidelity.com 2
  • Two engines under one ticker: crypto miners and exchanges on one side, digital payments processors on the other, about 50 names in all.fidelity.com
  • Fidelity builds the index itself, screening on revenue plus text analysis of company disclosures, and rebalances quarterly over four days.fidelity.com
  • STCE Charges 0.30% a year, roughly half the typical fund in its global thematic group. Schwab billed it as the lowest-cost crypto-related ETF when it launched in 2022.aboutschwab.com
  • Stocks, not coins: the index targets companies worldwide that may benefit from cryptocurrencies, digital assets and distributed-ledger technology.schwabassetmanagement.com
  • Cheap, straightforward and liquid enough for a niche theme, which puts it in the top quartile of its global thematic peer group.

Worth knowing

  • FDIG Non-diversified and industry-narrow. Fidelity's own documents flag bigger swings and meaningful exposure to a small number of issuers.fidelity.com
  • You own crypto-linked equities, not crypto. Miners and payment processors can respond to very different news on any given day.fidelity.com
  • Volume runs light next to the ETF giants, so spreads can widen and the market price can sit at a premium or discount to net asset value.fidelity.com
  • STCE Crypto-linked equities move violently, and with roughly 40 non-diversified names, a stumble at one holding is felt across the fund.aaii.com
  • It owns crypto-adjacent businesses, not bitcoin, so its path can diverge from the coins themselves in either direction.aaii.com
  • Modest asset base by ETF standards and distributions land only once or twice a year, so this is a theme sleeve rather than an income holding.

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
