Our read on each fund
GEMDB
VWOBA
In short
GEMD Emerging market debt priced in dollars, not local currency: the risk you take is issuer credit, not the peso. Goldman tracks a rules-based index of roughly 150 EM bonds for 0.30% and pays monthly.
VWOB Emerging-market government debt, Vanguard-style: about 200 dollar bonds from sovereigns and state-backed borrowers, indexed and capped so no one issuer dominates, for 0.15% a year. Income lands monthly.
Stated mandate
GEMD The Fund seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Goldman Sachs Emerging Markets USD Bond Index before fees and expenses. It normally invests at least 80% of assets, excluding securities-lending collateral, in securities included in that index.
VWOB The Fund seeks to track an index of U.S. dollar-denominated bonds issued by governments and government-related issuers in emerging-market countries.

How we measure overlap
Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
