PHYLBPGIM Active High Yield Bond ETF

SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

In short

PHYL A junk-bond ETF with a human at the wheel. PGIM's credit team picks the roughly 500 bonds here instead of buying the index, and charges about what the average high-yield ETF charges to do it.

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

PHYL The fund seeks total return from current income and capital appreciation.

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • PHYL Actively managed, yet priced at 0.39%, right at the high-yield ETF median. Active credit picking usually carries a fatter toll booth than that.
  • Roughly 500 below-investment-grade positions, so no single blown-up issuer defines the outcome. Income is paid out monthly.
  • The portfolio sticks tightly to the stated brief: US high-yield corporate credit, chosen with issuer-level and quantitative risk analysis. One of the closer mandate matches in its peer group.
  • Live since 2018, so the strategy has traded through real credit stress rather than a backtest.
  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.

Worth knowing

  • PHYL Index rivals are far cheaper: SCYB at 0.03% and SPHY at 0.05%. The manager's judgment is what the extra fee buys, and active calls can miss.
  • This is junk debt by design. Below-investment-grade issuers default more often, and prices tend to swing with the credit cycle rather than with Treasury yields.
  • Trading is moderate, not torrential. Spreads can run wider here than on the largest index high-yield ETFs, which matters most for big or hurried orders.
  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
