TRUOCVanEck Consumer Staples TruSector ETF

XLPAState Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF

In short

TRUO VanEck's answer to a quirk of fund tax law: diversification rules make most staples ETFs trim their biggest names. TRUO is actively managed to hold the sector at full market-cap weight, using a mix of individual stocks and targeted ETFs.

XLP One of the original sector funds, live since December 1998. XLP is the S&P 500's staples aisle: roughly 40 makers of soap, soda, snacks and smokes, cap-weighted, for eight basis points.

Stated mandate

TRUO The Fund is actively managed and seeks long-term capital appreciation through securities of consumer-staples-related companies or instruments providing exposure to them.

XLP The fund seeks to track, before expenses, the price and yield performance of the Consumer Staples Select Sector Index, representing U.S. consumer staples companies.

Why people hold it

  • TRUO RIC diversification rules cap single-stock weight, so index staples funds underweight the giants. TRUO blends stocks with targeted ETFs to keep the leaders at uncapped weight.vaneck.comvaneck.com 2
  • At 0.14% a year it undercuts the 0.37% median for broad staples funds, unusual for an active fund, though index rivals XLP and FSTA sit at 0.08%.
  • Active, but not stock-picking active: the stated aim is reflecting the sector's full economic composition, not making contrarian bets inside it.vaneck.com
  • XLP 0.08% a year against a peer-group median of 0.40%. In a slow-and-steady sector, that fee gap is one of the few things you actually control.
  • Part of the first suite of sector ETFs launched in 1998, and still a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades very actively. Getting in and out is rarely the hard part.ssga.com
  • Ties FSTA on fee and undercuts VDC, while holding strictly to S&P 500 members rather than a wider universe. Clean, literal exposure to the index's staples slice.ssga.com
  • Among the strongest implementations in the staples cohort: broad mandate, quarterly distributions, no structural quirks buried in the wrapper.

Worth knowing

  • TRUO Listed in June 2026, so the record is short and the fund is still building scale. It is not one of the category's heavily traded names, so spreads can run wider than XLP's.vaneck.com
  • Part of the exposure arrives through other ETFs rather than shares directly. That is the mechanism keeping weights uncapped, but it is a wrapper inside a wrapper.vaneck.com
  • Full market-cap weighting cuts both ways: in a top-heavy sector, a few giants drive more of the ride than they do in capped peers.vaneck.com
  • XLP About 40 names, market-cap weighted with index caps applied for diversification. The biggest retailers and household-product giants still carry outsized weight.spglobal.com
  • U.S. only. Foreign staples heavyweights sit outside the mandate; KXI casts a global net, and RSPS spreads weight evenly instead of by size.
  • This is one slice of the S&P 500, not a diversified core. Staples run on their own cycle and can drift far from the broad market for long stretches.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
