Our read on BAMU

ETF.net Research

DMost ultra-short bond ETFs are cheap index-style cash parking. BAMU goes the other way: an actively managed 0-2 year mix of Treasuries, investment-grade corporates and bond ETFs, priced like a strategy fund at 1.05%.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks current income. It is actively managed and invests at least 80% of assets in U.S. Treasuries and investment-grade corporate bonds with maturities from 0 to 2 years, plus related fixed-income ETFs; it does not seek to replicate an index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Active by design. Managers choose among short-dated Treasuries, investment-grade corporates and fixed-income ETFs instead of copying an index.
  2. 02The book has stayed inside the mandate on paper: at least 80% in U.S. Treasuries and investment-grade corporate bonds maturing within two years.
  3. 03Short by construction. A 0-2 year maturity band means far less rate sensitivity than a core bond fund carries.
  4. 04The stated goal is current income, with distributions on a quarterly schedule.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Cost is the trade-off: 1.05% a year, against category giants like VUSB at 0.10% and SHV at 0.15%. At the short end, fees take a real bite out of yield.
  2. 02It trades thinly next to the category's household names, so spreads can run wider and order size matters more.
  3. 03Young and modest in size: launched in 2023 by a boutique shop, without the record or scale of the incumbents it sits beside.
