Our read on DIM
CMost international dividend funds park you in mega-caps. DIM deletes the 300 biggest companies in developed markets outside the US and Canada, then weights what's left by the cash dividends those firms actually pay.
The fund is designed to mirror the performance of dividend-paying mid-cap equities from developed markets outside the United States and Canada.
Why people hold it
- Mid-cap by design: the index strips out the 300 largest developed ex-US, ex-Canada names, then keeps the top 75% of the remaining market cap. A slice most dividend rivals skip.sec.govwisdomtree.com
- Weighted by cash dividends paid, not market value, and reset once a year. A stock's price run-up doesn't automatically earn it a bigger slot.sec.govwisdomtree.com
- Running since 2006, roughly 600 mid-cap payers across developed Europe, Asia and Australasia. Pays quarterly.
- Rules-based throughout: the portfolio hews closely to its declared WisdomTree index, with no manager hunches in the mix.wisdomtree.com
Worth knowing
- At 0.58% a year it sits above the median for international dividend screens, and far above large-cap options like VYMI (0.07%) and SCHY (0.08%).
- A smaller, thinly traded fund, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than in the category giants. Limit orders are the usual answer.
- Foreign mid-caps tend to move harder than the mega-cap payers most peers hold, so the ride can be bumpier.
