Our read on EMQQ
DMost e-commerce ETFs are a bet on Amazon's neighborhood. EMQQ points the other way: internet and online-commerce companies based in emerging markets, roughly 120 of them, a mandate it has run since 2014.
The fund seeks to invest in companies that operate in the internet and ecommerce sectors within emerging markets.
Why people hold it
- The geography is the whole point. Its cohort is stacked with global and US online-retail funds (OGIG, EBIZ, IBUY, ONLN); EMQQ's mandate is emerging markets only.
- Roughly 120 holdings, so the exposure spreads across the theme instead of riding two or three megacap names.
- Not a startup: same emerging-markets internet mandate since its 2014 launch, from an issuer built around this one idea.
- A fund in the hundreds of millions with steady day-to-day volume, so getting in and out is among the smaller frictions here.
Worth knowing
- The specialty carries a specialty price: 0.86% a year, above the typical fee in its e-commerce peer group.
- Emerging-markets internet is one of the bumpier rides in this cohort, with currency moves and local policy shifts layered on top of tech-style swings.
- Distributions arrive once or twice a year at most. This is a growth-theme vehicle, not an income stream.
