Our read on FDNI
DMost internet ETFs are a wager on Silicon Valley. FDNI flips the map, tracking an index of roughly 40 internet companies based outside the United States. Same theme, different continent.
The fund seeks to track the investment results of the Dow Jones International Internet Index before fees and expenses.
Why people hold it
- One stated job: track the Dow Jones International Internet Index. A plain index fund inside a standard 1940 Act ETF wrapper, no leverage or derivatives layer.
- Its peer shelf (IBUY, ONLN, EBIZ) mostly shops the U.S. internet. FDNI is built from non-U.S. names, a genuinely different basket for the same theme.
- At 0.65%, the fee sits right at the median for its peer group. No surcharge for the international mandate.
- Running since 2018, so it has a real multi-year record in the wild rather than a launch-week backtest.
Worth knowing
- Thinly traded with a small asset base. Limit orders matter here, and the bid-ask spread is a real part of your cost on the way in and out.
- About 40 holdings, all listed abroad. Single names carry weight, and currency moves ride along with the stocks.
- Cheaper doors into the theme exist: OGIG at 0.48% and EBIZ at 0.50% undercut FDNI's 0.65%, though neither tracks the same ex-U.S. index.
