Our read on LGH

ETF.net Research

BA large-cap U.S. stock fund with an escape hatch built in. The HCM Defender 500 Index can step equity exposure down to 70/30, 40/60, or all cash as conditions change, by rule rather than by a manager's hunch.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks to track the HCM Defender 500 Index before fees and expenses. Its index generally uses large-capitalization U.S. equities but can reduce exposure through 70/30, 40/60, or all-cash positions as market conditions change.

Why people hold it

  1. 01The defense is written into the index, not improvised: preset steps to 70/30, 40/60, or fully cash replace a discretionary risk call.
  2. 02The engine is plain large-cap U.S. equity. The risk switch sits on top of familiar holdings instead of a derivatives sleeve you need a glossary to read.
  3. 03Trading since 2019, so the rules have met real market stress, and it has grown into a fund with several hundred million dollars behind it.
  4. 04Sticks closely to the index it advertises and sits in the upper half of its tactical-allocation peer group on our review.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 1.06% a year it runs above the typical fund in its tactical group. ENDW (0.22%) and ONOF (0.39%) pursue risk-switching mandates for considerably less.
  2. 02Shares change hands lightly, so bid-ask spreads can be wider than the fund's asset size suggests.
  3. 03By design it can hold far less stock than the market when the index de-risks, and cash flows out annually or semiannually rather than monthly.
