Our read on NBSD
DA 1986 mutual fund that swapped into an ETF wrapper in 2024: same team, same mandate. It hunts the highest current income it can find in investment-grade bonds while holding duration to three years or less, and pays monthly.
The fund seeks the highest available current income while maintaining liquidity and limiting principal risk; total return is secondary. It invests at least 80% of net assets in investment-grade fixed- and floating-rate debt and normally targets average portfolio duration of three years or less.
Why people hold it
- Not a startup strategy. It ran as the Neuberger Berman Short Duration Bond Fund from 1986 and converted into this ETF in June 2024, carrying over the portfolio and the record.nb.comsec.gov
- The three-year duration target is written into the mandate, along with at least 80% investment grade, so rate moves push it around less than a core aggregate bond fund.
- Roughly 1,100 fixed and floating rate positions, US and overseas, keep any single issuer small. Income lands monthly.
Worth knowing
- The 0.42% fee sits above the typical charge in its bond cohort. JPLD measures against the same 1-3 year government/credit index for 0.24%, and index agg funds like BND run 0.03%.
- Income comes first by design and total return is secondary. Short duration also means smaller price moves than long bonds when yields swing.
- Active picks across credit and floating rate debt can land either side of the plain 1-3 year benchmark, and the ETF's own trading history only starts in 2024.

How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
