Our read on STXT

ETF.net Research

CA go-anywhere active bond fund parked in an aisle full of three-basis-point index trackers. Strive's managers roam mortgages, structured credit, corporates and government debt in pursuit of maximum total return, and pay out monthly.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks maximum total return. It is actively managed and normally puts at least 80% of net assets plus investment borrowings into bonds across maturities, including mortgage-related, structured-credit, corporate, government, and bond-linked derivative exposures.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Actively managed, not index-bound: normally at least 80% of assets in bonds across maturities, with room for mortgage, structured-credit, corporate, government and bond-linked derivative exposure.
  2. 02Roughly 240 bonds rather than an index sleeve of thousands, so the managers' rate and credit calls actually show up in the portfolio.
  3. 03Distributions arrive monthly, the cadence most income-focused bond buyers plan around.
  4. 04The mandate reaches beyond US paper into international issues, giving the team a wider opportunity set than a domestic-only aggregate fund.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 0.49% a year it sits above the category median and many times the 0.03% charged by index heavyweights BND, SPAB and SCHZ. Active management is the thing you are paying for.
  2. 02Thinly traded and small beside the aggregate-bond giants, which tends to mean wider spreads and choppier fills than the household names.
  3. 03No index to fall back on: results track the team's duration and credit decisions, and the derivatives allowance adds moving parts a plain bond index fund does not have.
