Our read on TQQQ
BThe original 3x Nasdaq-100 fund, trading since 2010 and one of the busiest tickers in the leveraged aisle. It resets its exposure every single day, which makes it a short-horizon tool by design.
The fund seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to three times the daily performance of the Nasdaq-100 Index.
Why people hold it
- One ticker, no margin account: the fund aims for three times the daily move of the Nasdaq-100, an index of 100 of the largest non-financial names listed on Nasdaq.proshares.com
- ProShares launched it in 2010 as the first ETF offering magnified 3x daily exposure to the Nasdaq-100, so there is a long record across several boom and bust cycles.proshares.com
- Among the most heavily traded funds in the leveraged category, which generally means tight spreads and easy entry and exit for a fast-moving strategy.
- At 0.97% a year, it prices below the typical leveraged-bull fund, and it stands among the strongest implementations in that peer group.
Worth knowing
- The 3x target applies to one day. Hold longer and returns can land well above or below three times the index, with choppy markets working against you.proshares.com
- Leverage runs both directions: a rough day for the Nasdaq-100 shows up roughly tripled in the fund.proshares.com
- The current 0.97% fee reflects a waiver running through September 30, 2026. Without that waiver, costs would be higher.proshares.com

TQQQ Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 56.7%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.91
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −81.7%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 3.71
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
