BAMBDBrookstone Intermediate Bond ETF

SPABAState Street SPDR Portfolio Aggregate Bond ETF

In short

BAMB A 2023-vintage intermediate bond fund with one stated job: current income. The story is the sticker. It charges 1.04% a year in the most commoditized corner of the market, where the index giants work for pennies.

SPAB A 2007-vintage core bond fund priced at 0.03%: roughly 8,500 US investment-grade bonds in one ticket, at the same rock-bottom fee the household names charge for the same index.

Stated mandate

BAMB The Fund seeks to provide current income.

SPAB The fund seeks to track the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index before fees and expenses, providing broad exposure to U.S.-dollar-denominated investment-grade bonds.

Why people hold it

  • BAMB Simple mandate, plainly stated: current income from US bonds inside a standard 1940 Act fund. What the portfolio holds lines up closely with what the prospectus says it does.
  • Income arrives quarterly, a steady calendar rhythm rather than unpredictable lumps.
  • Live since 2023 and past the seed-capital stage, with a real shareholder base rather than a launch balance sitting on the books.
  • SPAB 0.03% a year against a 0.36% median for its peer group, and the same ticket price as AGG, SCHZ and BBAG on the identical index.
  • Roughly 8,500 dollar-denominated investment-grade bonds in one line item, tracking the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index. Diversification you could not assemble bond by bond.ssga.com
  • Trades actively and has tracked its index closely, putting it among the stronger implementations in the core-bond group.
  • Running since 2007, now a multi-billion-dollar fund, and it pays monthly rather than quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • BAMB Cost is the trade-off: 1.04% a year, while core bond index rivals such as BND, SPAB and SCHZ charge 0.03%. That gap comes out of income every year.
  • Thinly traded, so the gap between bid and ask can add to the cost of getting in and out.
  • In a crowded field of nearly 200 core bond funds, it sits in the lower half, where cheap, broad index trackers set the bar.
  • SPAB Bond prices move opposite yields. When rates rise the index falls and the fund follows it down; a 0.03% fee cannot cushion that.
  • AGG, SCHZ and BBAG hold the same declared index at the same 0.03%. Picking among them comes down to spreads and platform, not the portfolio.
  • Investment grade and US dollar only by mandate: high yield and foreign-currency debt sit outside the remit.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
