Our read on each fund

ETF.net Research

BBCAAJPMorgan BetaBuilders Canada ETF

EISCiShares MSCI Israel ETF

In short

BBCA Canada, at a discount. BBCA tracks a Morningstar index of roughly 80 Canadian stocks for 0.19% a year, a fraction of what most single-country funds charge, and it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar fund since its 2018 launch.

EIS One ticker for the whole Israeli stock market: roughly 120 names, large down to small, tracked through an MSCI index and packaged by iShares since 2008.

Stated mandate

BBCA The fund seeks to track the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees and expenses. It uses a passive indexing approach to approximate the index rather than outperform it.

EIS The fund seeks to track an index composed of Israeli equities, providing targeted exposure to companies in Israel.

Why people hold it

  • BBCA Costs 0.19% a year, against a 0.50% median for developed single-country funds. The older Canada name in this group, EWC, charges 0.50%.
  • Plain passive plumbing: it aims to approximate the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees rather than beat it. No stock-picking surprises.jpmorgan.com
  • Running since 2018, now a multi-billion-dollar fund that pays quarterly, and one of the stronger implementations in its single-country peer group.
  • EIS "Investable Market" in the index name means mid and small caps ride along, roughly 120 holdings instead of a top-ten roster of giants.ishares.com
  • Live since March 2008, so it comes with a long public record across multiple market cycles rather than a short history and a backtest.
  • The index is capped, which limits how much of the fund any single company can occupy in a market where a few names loom large.ishares.com

Worth knowing

  • BBCA One country, about 80 stocks. The sector mix is whatever Canada's market hands you, set by the index rather than by a diversification plan.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the busiest names on the tape, so spreads can widen on large or off-hours orders.
  • Indexing means no manager leaning away from a soft patch in Canadian equities. You get the index, minus the 0.19% fee.
  • EIS At 0.59%, it runs above the roughly 0.50% median for single-country developed-market funds, and well above index peers such as FLKR at 0.09%.
  • One country, one currency, one headline cycle. A single-country fund concentrates risks that a regional or global mandate would spread around.
  • Distributions arrive annually or semiannually, not on a quarterly drumbeat, so cash lands in lumps.
