BETZDRoundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF

ESPOBVanEck Video Gaming and eSports ETF

In short

BETZ A pure play on sportsbooks and online casinos, run by a manager rather than an index. On a shelf crowded with video game and esports funds, BETZ is the one that stays on the betting slip.

ESPO Video games, straight up. ESPO tracks a global index of game developers, esports companies and the hardware and software behind them, in a concentrated basket of roughly 30 names, running since 2018.

Stated mandate

BETZ The Fund seeks total return through active investment in equity securities of companies involved in sports betting and iGaming.

ESPO The ETF seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS Global Video Gaming and eSports Index. The index covers companies involved in video game development, esports, and related hardware and software.

Why people hold it

  • BETZ Undiluted theme: the fund seeks total return by investing in sports betting and iGaming companies, not a broad consumer basket where the sportsbooks are a rounding error.roundhillinvestments.com
  • Actively managed, so the roughly 40-stock lineup can be reshaped as operators rise and fade, instead of waiting on an index reconstitution calendar.
  • A different bet than its cohort neighbors: ESPO, HERO and NERD center on video games and esports, while BETZ is built around wagering and online casino names.
  • One of the early arrivals to the theme, trading since June 2020, with a live track record through the post-legalization buildout rather than a fresh launch.
  • ESPO A tight read on the theme: the index covers video game development, esports, and related hardware and software, so the basket stays near the console and the code instead of drifting into general entertainment.vaneck.com
  • Global mandate. Gaming's biggest publishers are listed all over the world, and ESPO's index is built to reach them rather than stopping at US-listed names.vaneck.com
  • Priced at 0.55%, right at the middle of the gaming and esports ETF group, and one of the stronger overall implementations among its peers.
  • Launched in 2018, making it one of the elder statesmen of gaming ETFs, with a few hundred million dollars of assets behind it.

Worth knowing

  • BETZ The 0.75% expense ratio sits on the expensive side of the gaming and betting shelf, the price of an active manager over a cheaper index product.
  • Roughly 40 stocks tied to one industry means moves can be sharp in both directions, and single-name news carries real weight here.
  • Trades lighter than the largest thematic funds, so bid-ask spreads can be wider, and payouts come at most once or twice a year rather than monthly.
  • ESPO Roughly 30 holdings. One publisher's flopped launch or blowout quarter lands harder here than it would in a broad index.
  • Not the cheapest seat in the arcade: HERO and NERD both charge 0.50% for their own takes on gaming.
  • Trades lighter than mainstream index funds, so spreads can widen in fast markets. Distributions come once or twice a year, not monthly.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
