Our read on each fund
CBOND
EMBXB
In short
CBON The first US-listed ETF to open China's onshore bond market to American buyers, back in 2014. One country, one currency, a few dozen RMB bonds from government, policy-bank and credit issuers.
EMBX Nearly every EM bond ETF in this group tracks a J.P. Morgan index. EMBX doesn't: it's an active, index-agnostic fund roaming sovereign and corporate debt in both hard and local currency, run by the same team since 2012, for 0.65%.
Stated mandate
CBON The fund seeks to replicate the price and yield performance of the FTSE Chinese Broad Bond 0–10 Diversified Select Index before fees and expenses. The index covers fixed-rate, RMB-denominated bonds issued in China by credit, governmental, and quasi-governmental issuers.
EMBX The ETF seeks total return from income and capital appreciation through active investment in debt securities issued by emerging-market governments, quasi-government entities, and corporations.

How we measure overlap
Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
