EJULBInnovator Emerging Markets Power Buffer ETF

EOCTBInnovator Emerging Markets Power Buffer ETF

In short

EJUL Buffered downside is easy to find on the S&P 500. EJUL does it on emerging markets: it tracks EEM up to a cap and absorbs the first 15% of losses over a 12-month outcome period that resets every July.

EOCT Buffer ETFs mostly babysit the S&P 500. EOCT aims the same machinery at emerging markets: upside in the iShares MSCI EM ETF up to a cap, with the first 15% of a drop absorbed, then a reset every October.

Stated mandate

EJUL The Fund seeks to match the return of the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF over the outcome period, subject to a stated upside cap and protection against the first 15% of losses.

EOCT The fund seeks capped exposure to the iShares MSCI EM ETF while protecting against the first 15% of losses during each approximately annual outcome period. It resets at the end of each period and may be held indefinitely.

Why people hold it

  • EJUL The trade is written into the fund's own documents: the first 15% of EEM's decline over the outcome period is absorbed before losses reach you.innovatoretfs.com
  • Emerging markets is thin ground for defined-outcome funds. Innovator's EEM-linked series (EJUL, EJAN, EBUF) is one of the few places this structure exists at all.
  • Running since 2019, and a plain 1940 Act ETF: no K-1, no bank note behind it, unlike the structured products that sell the same payoff shape.innovatoretfs.com
  • One of the easier funds in its buffer peer group to get in and out of, which matters in a category where trading costs can quietly eat the buffer.
  • EOCT Downside buffer where it is rare. Defined-outcome funds cluster around US large caps; this one applies a 15% buffer to emerging market stocks via the iShares MSCI EM ETF.innovatoretfs.com
  • The rules are fixed, not discretionary: 15% of losses absorbed and upside capped over each roughly one-year period, which resets on October 1. No manager judgment calls mid-period.innovatoretfs.com
  • October is one rung of a ladder. Innovator runs the same emerging markets buffer on January, April and July start dates (EJAN, EAPR, EJUL), so entry points can be staggered.innovatoretfs.cominnovatoretfs.com 2
  • At 0.89%, the fee sits right at the middle of the buffer-ETF pack, not at the expensive end.

Worth knowing

  • EJUL Buffer and cap are designed around a full July-to-June period. Buy mid-period and you inherit whatever buffer and upside are left, not the headline terms.innovatoretfs.com
  • Upside stops at the cap reset each July, so a runaway emerging markets rally leaves gains on the table. Protection is bought with ceiling.
  • 0.89% a year: median for buffer funds, but many multiples of a plain emerging markets index fund. And it's built for price return, not income.
  • EOCT Protection is rented, not free: the cap is reset each October off option prices at that moment. Emerging market swings can be violent, and the buffer sits before fees.innovatoretfs.com
  • It tracks the reference ETF's price move, so emerging market dividends are not passed through. The fund has not been paying distributions.
  • Small and lightly traded, and buying mid-period means your own buffer and cap differ from the headline numbers. Limit orders and a look at the issuer's daily figures help.innovatoretfs.com
