VONEAVanguard Russell 1000 ETF

In short

EPS Large-cap core with a profit filter. Roughly 500 U.S. companies, all of them earnings generators, tracked since 2007 for 0.08% a year. Same plumbing as a plain index fund, with a screen most of them skip.

VONE The Russell 1000 is the standard-issue US large-cap benchmark, and VONE is the low-fee door into it: about 1,000 names for 0.06%, well under half what the other big fund tracking the same index charges.

Stated mandate

EPS The fund seeks to track earnings-generating large-cap companies in the U.S. equity market.

VONE The fund seeks to track the performance of the Russell 1000 Index.

Why people hold it

  • EPS The screen is the whole point: the index holds large U.S. companies that actually generate earnings, so unprofitable names do not ride in on market cap alone.wisdomtree.com
  • 0.08% a year, under the median for its large-cap peer group, and it still spreads across roughly 500 stocks.
  • Running since 2007 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, it has tracked its index tightly and ranks in the top quartile of its large-cap cohort.
  • Pays out quarterly, the standard cadence for a core equity holding.
  • VONE Same declared index as the pricier incumbent at 0.15%, for 0.06%. That is under half the fee, and comfortably below the 0.14% the typical large-cap tracker charges.
  • Plain plumbing: about 1,000 US large caps, no tilts or screens. The Russell lineup is rebuilt on a published calendar, now twice a year, so risers enter on schedule.lseg.com
  • Running since 2010 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, it sits in the top quartile of its large-cap peer group and pays quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • EPS It trades thinly for the category, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than the heavily traded core names in the group.
  • Cheaper shelf-mates exist: SCHX and VV charge 0.03%, BKLC charges nothing. The earnings screen is what the extra basis points buy.
  • Screening on earnings means the portfolio can look different from a plain cap-weighted large-cap index, and its results will drift from that benchmark in both directions.
  • VONE A thousand names sounds sweeping, but the sleeve is US-only and large-cap-only. No small caps, no international exposure.
  • Cheap, not cheapest. SCHX and VV run 0.03% and BKLC runs 0.00%, though each tracks a different large-cap index rather than the Russell 1000.
  • Volume is moderate rather than hub-like, so larger orders can meet thinner depth than in the category's busiest tickers.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
