GTOHBInvesco Short Duration High Yield ETF

SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

In short

GTOH Most high-yield ETFs are index machines that own whatever the benchmark hands them. GTOH is the active, short-maturity cut: a manager picks roughly 160 junk bonds, keeps maturities short, and pays out monthly.

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

GTOH The Fund is an actively managed ETF focused on generating current income through a short-duration high-yield strategy.

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • GTOH Short maturities are the point: less price swing from rate moves than a long-dated junk portfolio, while still reaching for high-yield income.invesco.com
  • Actively managed, so the team picks credits and uses derivatives to steer duration instead of owning the whole index by weight.invesco.com
  • Income arrives monthly, not quarterly, and the portfolio has stuck closely to the short-duration high-yield job it advertises since its 2022 launch.
  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.

Worth knowing

  • GTOH 0.48% net of a waiver through August 31, 2027 (0.49% gross), above the category median. Index peers SCYB (0.03%) and USHY (0.08%) buy the broad market far cheaper.
  • A small, lightly traded fund. Spreads can be wider than the giants of the category, so limit orders matter more here.
  • Short duration trims rate sensitivity, not credit risk. These are below-investment-grade borrowers, and they can wobble alongside stocks.
  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
