HYBLCState Street Blackstone High Income ETF

SPHYAState Street SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF

In short

HYBL A Blackstone-branded, actively managed take on high income: rather than tracking a junk bond index, the managers roam bonds and loans chasing income with less volatility than those markets.

SPHY State Street's junk-bond workhorse: roughly 1,900 US high yield bonds in one wrapper for 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical high yield ETF charges, with income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

HYBL Actively managed strategy seeking risk-adjusted total return and high current income, with lower volatility than general bond and loan segments over full market cycles.

SPHY The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • HYBL Active by design. The mandate is risk-adjusted total return plus high current income, so the team can shift across bond and loan credit instead of holding whatever an index says.ssga.com
  • Volatility is part of the job description: the fund targets lower swings than the broad bond and loan segments over full market cycles, not just the fattest yield.
  • Pays monthly and spreads risk across several hundred credit positions, so no single borrower carries the income stream.
  • State Street plumbing, Blackstone name on the door, in a plain ETF wrapper you can trade in any brokerage account.
  • SPHY 0.05% a year against a peer-group median about eight times higher. In high yield, the fee comes straight out of coupon income, so the gap does real work.
  • Holds about 1,900 bonds tracking the ICE BofA US High Yield Index, broad enough that no single issuer's trouble dominates the portfolio.ssga.com
  • Live since 2012, a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and has stuck tightly to its stated index rather than drifting from the mandate.
  • Distributions arrive monthly, in step with how the underlying coupons come in.

Worth knowing

  • HYBL The 0.70% fee is the price of the active seat. Index high yield rivals run far cheaper: SCYB at 0.03%, SPHY at 0.05%, USHY at 0.08%.
  • Its stated yardstick is the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, an investment-grade benchmark, so lining it up against junk bond funds takes your own math.
  • Launched in 2022, so the track record covers a short stretch of credit history rather than multiple full cycles.
  • SPHY This is below-investment-grade credit. Defaults and spread moves drive the price far more than Treasury yields do, and sell-offs in this asset class can be sharp.
  • Fees here are already near the floor: SCYB lists 0.03% and HYLB matches at 0.05%, so the cost edge over the strongest peers is narrow.
  • Scope is US high yield corporates, full stop. No investment-grade ballast, no emerging market debt, nothing to soften a credit drawdown from inside the fund.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
