PSLDInvesco Dorsey Wright Consumer Staples Momentum ETF

XLPAState Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF

In short

PSL Most staples funds buy the whole aisle. PSL ranks staples names on relative strength and reshuffles quarterly, holding roughly 50 at 0.60% net of a waiver through August 31, 2028.

XLP One of the original sector funds, live since December 1998. XLP is the S&P 500's staples aisle: roughly 40 makers of soap, soda, snacks and smokes, cap-weighted, for eight basis points.

Stated mandate

PSL The Fund is based on the Dorsey Wright Consumer Staples Technical Leaders Index, which selects at least 30 consumer-staples securities exhibiting powerful relative-strength characteristics.

XLP The fund seeks to track, before expenses, the price and yield performance of the Consumer Staples Select Sector Index, representing U.S. consumer staples companies.

Why people hold it

  • PSL Momentum inside the market's most defensive aisle: the index picks at least 30 staples names showing relative strength, then rebalances and reconstitutes every quarter.invesco.com
  • Price strength, not market cap, decides who gets in, so the roughly 50-stock lineup can look very different from the cap-weighted staples giants.invesco.com
  • Live since 2006, making it one of the longest-running momentum sector funds on the board, with pay-outs on a quarterly schedule.
  • XLP 0.08% a year against a peer-group median of 0.40%. In a slow-and-steady sector, that fee gap is one of the few things you actually control.
  • Part of the first suite of sector ETFs launched in 1998, and still a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades very actively. Getting in and out is rarely the hard part.ssga.com
  • Ties FSTA on fee and undercuts VDC, while holding strictly to S&P 500 members rather than a wider universe. Clean, literal exposure to the index's staples slice.ssga.com
  • Among the strongest implementations in the staples cohort: broad mandate, quarterly distributions, no structural quirks buried in the wrapper.

Worth knowing

  • PSL The screen costs: 0.60% net of a waiver through August 31, 2028 (0.76% gross) sits above the staples category median. XLP charges 0.08%, VDC 0.09%, neither under a waiver.
  • Thinly traded next to the big staples funds, so spreads can widen and limit orders earn their keep.
  • A quarterly momentum reset means holdings turn over and the portfolio can drift far from the broad staples benchmark, for better or worse.invesco.com
  • XLP About 40 names, market-cap weighted with index caps applied for diversification. The biggest retailers and household-product giants still carry outsized weight.spglobal.com
  • U.S. only. Foreign staples heavyweights sit outside the mandate; KXI casts a global net, and RSPS spreads weight evenly instead of by size.
  • This is one slice of the S&P 500, not a diversified core. Staples run on their own cycle and can drift far from the broad market for long stretches.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
