SMMUBPIMCO Short Term Municipal Bond Active Exchange-Traded Fund

VTESAVanguard Short-Term Tax-Exempt Bond ETF

In short

SMMU PIMCO's muni desk running short-maturity bonds in an ETF wrapper since 2010. No index to hug: about 300 positions picked by hand, with interest intended to come out exempt from federal income tax and cash paid monthly.

VTES Vanguard's muni ETF on a short leash: an AMT-free tax-exempt index, but capped at seven years to trim interest-rate sensitivity. Five basis points, roughly 2,700 bonds, income paid monthly.

Stated mandate

SMMU The Fund seeks maximum total return while preserving capital through prudent investment practices.

VTES The Fund seeks to track an index representing investment-grade U.S. municipal bonds with remaining maturities from one month through seven years.

Why people hold it

  • SMMU Active by design. There is no benchmark to copy, so the managers set the maturity mix and the roughly 300 positions themselves, chasing total return while preserving capital.
  • The portfolio is built from municipal debt whose interest is intended to be exempt from federal income tax, and distributions land monthly rather than once a year.
  • Short maturities turn the interest-rate dial down, which is the whole point of the short-term sleeve versus a full-maturity muni index fund.
  • Not a startup: trading since 2010, a multi-billion-dollar fund today, and structured as a standard 1940 Act ETF.
  • VTES Costs 0.05% a year, a fraction of what the typical muni-bond fund in its category charges. One of the cheapest ways into tax-exempt bonds.
  • Maturities run one month to seven years, so the portfolio moves less on rate swings than long-dated muni funds. Short duration is the whole point here.vanguard.com
  • The index is AMT-free national investment-grade munis, so interest is federally tax-exempt and not caught by the alternative minimum tax.vanguard.com
  • Roughly 2,700 bonds via index sampling, run by Vanguard's fixed income group, with distributions paid monthly. It tracks its benchmark closely.vanguard.com

Worth knowing

  • SMMU Active talent bills for itself: 0.35% a year, above the muni-ETF median of 0.30% and many times what index rivals like VTEB (0.03%) or MUB (0.05%) charge.
  • No published index means no line-by-line yardstick. What you get depends on the desk's calls, not a rulebook you can read in advance.
  • The tax break targeted here is federal. State and local treatment sits outside the mandate and varies with where you live.
  • VTES Short maturities cut both ways. Vanguard's own materials describe moderate current income, the trade-off for less rate sensitivity than longer muni portfolios.vanguard.com
  • It's a national fund, so it isn't structured to shelter state income tax the way single-state muni ETFs such as NYF are.
  • Launched in 2023, it has a shorter live record than muni ETFs that have been trading for over a decade, including its broader sibling VTEB.
