Our read on EURL
DA 3x daily bet on developed Europe in a category built almost entirely around US benchmarks. EURL aims to deliver 300% of the FTSE Developed Europe All Cap Index's move, for one day at a time.
The fund seeks a daily return equal to 300% of the FTSE Developed Europe All Cap Index's performance, before fees and expenses. Its objective applies to a single day rather than longer cumulative periods.
Why people hold it
- Rare geography for a leveraged fund: the target is the FTSE Developed Europe All Cap Index, an all-cap basket of developed European stocks rather than another US large-cap benchmark.
- Expenses of 1.05% a year sit in line with the typical 3x bull fund, and far below the 2.74% charged by UPV, the other US fund pointed at the same Europe index.
- Trading since January 2014, a long run for a single-region leveraged product, and it lands in the upper half of Direxion and ProShares' crowded 3x bull field on our review.
Worth knowing
- The 300% objective applies to a single day, not longer stretches. Daily resets compound, so a multi-day result can look nothing like 3x the index over the same window.
- Small and thinly traded next to the big US-index leveraged names, so spreads and order type carry more weight here than in the category's household tickers.
- European markets close before US hours, so the index level driving the daily reset is set overseas while the shares keep trading in New York.

EURL Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 39.7%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.89
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −74.7%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 2.02
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
