Our read on IXN

ETF.net Research

In short

BMost tech ETFs stop at the US border. IXN doesn't: it tracks a capped global technology index, so software, semiconductor and hardware companies listed outside America sit inside the mandate. It has been running since 2001.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to track an index of global technology-sector equities, providing global sector exposure with diversified access to software, semiconductor, and hardware companies worldwide.

Why people hold it

  • Global by design: the index reaches technology listed worldwide, so foreign chipmakers and hardware names are part of the portfolio, not an afterthought.ishares.com
  • Trading since 2001, through the dot-com hangover and every tech cycle since, and now a multi-billion-dollar fund from one of the largest ETF shops.
  • The benchmark is a capped index (the 4.5/22.5/45 rule), a built-in brake on how much weight any single giant can carry.ishares.com
  • At 0.37% a year, the fee sits a touch under the median for broad technology ETFs, and it spreads across roughly 130 holdings.

Worth knowing

  • The US-only heavyweights undercut it badly on price: XLK, VGT and FTEC all charge under a tenth of a percent against 0.37% here.
  • Moderately traded rather than a household name at the screen, so trade size and limit orders matter more than with the biggest tech funds.
  • One sector, one storyline: tech names tend to move together, and the overseas holdings add currency movement on top.
