Our read on IYW
BA tech fund from the year 2000 that plays by its own rules: the mandate reaches past the official sector line to "technology-enabled" companies, and the index carries caps that keep the giants in check.
Under ordinary conditions, the Fund commits a minimum of 80% of its assets to equity securities issued by U.S. technology or technology-enabled companies.
Why people hold it
- The charter covers U.S. technology and technology-enabled companies, a wider net than a strict sector label, so the lineup isn't bound to one classification committee's list.ishares.com
- Launched in 2000, it has run through the dot-com bust, the smartphone era and the AI build-out under the same iShares roof. Long track records in tech are rare.
- A multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively, which is what you want when you need to get in or out without drama.
- The 0.38% fee sits just under the typical broad tech fund, and the portfolio has stuck closely to its stated mandate. It sits in the upper half of its peer group.
Worth knowing
- Cheaper neighbors exist. VGT, XLK and FTEC all charge under a tenth of a percent, so 0.38% is a real premium for the broader mandate.
- About 150 holdings, weighted by size, so a handful of mega-cap platforms set the tone. The index's 22.5/45 caps only bite at the extremes.
- One sector, one country: it swings harder than the broad market in both directions. Distributions arrive quarterly.
