BAMUDBrookstone Ultra-Short Bond ETF

XHLFABondBloxx Bloomberg Six Month Target Duration US Treasury ETF

In short

BAMU Most of the T-bill aisle just holds bills and charges next to nothing. BAMU goes the other way: an active manager steering maturities inside a 0 to 2 year band off its own read on the yield curve, for 1.00% a year.

XHLF Most cash-parking funds pick a maturity bucket. XHLF picks a number: it blends Treasury bills to an average duration of about six months, resets to that target monthly, and charges three basis points to do it.

Stated mandate

BAMU The Fund seeks current income. It is actively managed and invests at least 80% of assets in U.S. Treasuries and investment-grade corporate bonds with maturities from 0 to 2 years, plus related fixed-income ETFs; it does not seek to replicate an index.

XHLF The Fund seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. Treasury securities.

Why people hold it

  • BAMU Does what the prospectus says: at least 80% in U.S. Treasuries and investment-grade corporates maturing inside two years. Portfolio and mandate line up closely.sec.gov
  • The adviser dials duration to its near-term rate outlook and the shape of the yield curve, a lever the index bill funds in this category do not have.sec.gov
  • Not just bills: an investment-grade corporate sleeve and fixed-income ETFs can add income potential beyond Treasuries alone. Income is paid quarterly.sec.gov
  • XHLF Costs 0.03% a year, against a typical short-Treasury peer near 0.14%. In cash-like funds, where returns come from bills everyone owns, fee is the main lever.
  • Tracks an index built to hold an average duration of roughly six months, rebalanced monthly, so exposure stays anchored instead of drifting as bills mature.bondbloxxetf.com
  • Sits in the gap between 0-3 month bill funds and one-year funds. Its sibling XONE targets a one-year duration at the same 0.03%, so the two can be mixed to dial in duration.
  • US Treasury bills only, no credit bets hiding in the portfolio, run in a multi-billion-dollar fund that has stayed close to its index.

Worth knowing

  • BAMU The 1.00% fee is above the category median, and above ICSH at 0.08%, VUSB at 0.10% and VBIL at 0.06%. On a 0 to 2 year bond portfolio, fee eats a real slice of yield.
  • Thinly traded next to the category's household names, so spreads can be wider and limit orders matter more.
  • Credit and active risk ride along: corporates and ETF positions are not Treasuries, and the manager's curve calls can land either way.sec.gov
  • XHLF Six months of duration is not zero. Prices move a touch more when yields shift than in 0-3 month bill funds such as BIL or CLIP.
  • Income rides whatever Treasury bills happen to pay, and distributions arrive on an irregular rhythm rather than a fixed amount or schedule.
  • Volume is moderate next to the largest bill ETFs, so spreads can be a bit wider, which matters more on big tickets than small ones.
