ETF.net Research

BBCAAJPMorgan BetaBuilders Canada ETF

ENORDiShares MSCI Norway ETF

In short

BBCA Canada, at a discount. BBCA tracks a Morningstar index of roughly 80 Canadian stocks for 0.19% a year, a fraction of what most single-country funds charge, and it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar fund since its 2018 launch.

ENOR One ticker for Norway's listed market, large caps down to small. The index reaches roughly 99% of the country's investable stocks and applies caps that stop any single giant from swallowing the fund.

Stated mandate

BBCA The fund seeks to track the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees and expenses. It uses a passive indexing approach to approximate the index rather than outperform it.

ENOR The fund seeks to track an index composed of Norwegian equities and provides targeted, single-country exposure to companies in Norway.

Why people hold it

  • BBCA Costs 0.19% a year, against a 0.50% median for developed single-country funds. The older Canada name in this group, EWC, charges 0.50%.
  • Plain passive plumbing: it aims to approximate the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees rather than beat it. No stock-picking surprises.jpmorgan.com
  • Running since 2018, now a multi-billion-dollar fund that pays quarterly, and one of the stronger implementations in its single-country peer group.
  • ENOR Broad reach for a single-country fund: the MSCI Norway IMI 25/50 Index spans large, mid and small caps and covers about 99% of Norway's free float-adjusted market.msci.com
  • Concentration limits are built into the index. It applies the 25/50 caps US funds must respect, so no one stock can run away with the portfolio.msci.commsci.com 2
  • Over a decade of live history, launched by iShares in 2012 and traded through multiple market cycles since.ishares.com

Worth knowing

  • BBCA One country, about 80 stocks. The sector mix is whatever Canada's market hands you, set by the index rather than by a diversification plan.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the busiest names on the tape, so spreads can widen on large or off-hours orders.
  • Indexing means no manager leaning away from a soft patch in Canadian equities. You get the index, minus the 0.19% fee.
  • ENOR The 0.53% fee sits a touch above the median for developed single-country funds, and well above the 0.09% charged by trackers such as FLKR and FLAU.
  • About 60 stocks in one small market, and the krone matters: returns reflect the currency's move against the dollar as well as the shares.ishares.com
  • Modest in size and only moderately traded, so spreads can run wider than on giant broad-market funds. Limit orders are your friend.
