BBCAAJPMorgan BetaBuilders Canada ETF

ISRACVanEck Israel ETF

In short

BBCA Canada, at a discount. BBCA tracks a Morningstar index of roughly 80 Canadian stocks for 0.19% a year, a fraction of what most single-country funds charge, and it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar fund since its 2018 launch.

ISRA One ticker for Israel. ISRA tracks the BlueStar Israel Global Index, a benchmark built around companies generally considered Israeli rather than an Israel sleeve carved out of a world index, and it has been running since 2013.

Stated mandate

BBCA The fund seeks to track the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees and expenses. It uses a passive indexing approach to approximate the index rather than outperform it.

ISRA The fund seeks to replicate, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the BlueStar Israel Global Index, which represents equity securities of companies generally considered Israeli.

Why people hold it

  • BBCA Costs 0.19% a year, against a 0.50% median for developed single-country funds. The older Canada name in this group, EWC, charges 0.50%.
  • Plain passive plumbing: it aims to approximate the Morningstar Canada Target Market Exposure Index before fees rather than beat it. No stock-picking surprises.jpmorgan.com
  • Running since 2018, now a multi-billion-dollar fund that pays quarterly, and one of the stronger implementations in its single-country peer group.
  • ISRA Purpose-built reference: the BlueStar Israel Global Index targets equities of companies generally considered Israeli, not just whatever a broad global benchmark happens to classify as Israel.vaneck.com
  • Launched in 2013, so this is a long-running Israel fund with a real track record behind it, not a fresh thematic launch.
  • Roughly 80 holdings spread the exposure across Israel's market rather than resting on a few megacap names.
  • Plain plumbing: a standard 1940 Act ETF holding index equities, with no leverage or derivatives overlay to unpack.vaneck.com

Worth knowing

  • BBCA One country, about 80 stocks. The sector mix is whatever Canada's market hands you, set by the index rather than by a diversification plan.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the busiest names on the tape, so spreads can widen on large or off-hours orders.
  • Indexing means no manager leaning away from a soft patch in Canadian equities. You get the index, minus the 0.19% fee.
  • ISRA The 0.59% expense ratio sits above the typical single-country developed fund, and low-cost peers like FLKR and FLAU charge 0.09%.
  • It trades thinly next to the heavyweights of its group, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads and more friction getting in and out.
  • Single-country design means Israeli politics, the shekel and regional events move the whole portfolio together. Distributions come once or twice a year, not monthly.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
