Our read on each fund

ETF.net Research

BBPAVirtus Biotech ETF

SBIOCALPS Medical Breakthroughs ETF

In short

BBP Biotech, minus the coin flips. BBP tracks an index of US-listed biotech companies that already have at least one FDA-approved therapy, so the basket leans commercial-stage instead of clinical-trial hopefuls.

SBIO SBIO goes at biotech through a purpose-built medical breakthroughs index instead of the household benchmarks, spreading roughly 100 drug developers across one basket. A specialist route, priced at the category's middle.

Stated mandate

BBP The fund seeks to track the LifeSci Biotechnology Products Index, which consists of U.S.-listed biotechnology stocks with at least one FDA-approved drug therapy.

SBIO The fund seeks investment results that generally track, before fees and expenses, the performance of the S-Network Medical Breakthroughs Index (PMBI).

Why people hold it

  • BBP The screen does the heavy lifting: index membership requires at least one FDA-approved drug therapy, which filters out pre-approval story stocks.
  • 0.34% a year undercuts the biotech cohort median of 0.50% and sits below IBB's 0.44%.
  • Running since 2014 and spread across roughly 200 US-listed names, so one approval or rejection does not decide the whole basket.
  • One of the stronger builds in its biotech and genomics peer group, with a portfolio that stays close to the index it promises.
  • SBIO Tracks the S-Network Medical Breakthroughs Index, a dedicated rules-based basket rather than the standard biotech benchmarks most funds in the group follow.
  • Roughly 100 holdings, so no single drug readout carries the whole fund.
  • The 0.50% expense ratio sits right at the median for biotech and genomics funds. No premium charged for the narrower mandate.
  • Trading since 2014, giving it a decade-plus of live operating history through several biotech cycles.

Worth knowing

  • BBP Thinly traded and modest in size next to the category's household names. Spreads can widen, which makes limit orders the safer habit.
  • Income is not the point here. The fund has not been paying distributions, so the return story is price.
  • An approved drug filters risk, it does not erase it. This is a single-sector biotech basket, and sector drawdowns hit everything in it.
  • SBIO Thinly traded next to the giants of the category, so spreads and limit orders matter more here than with the household names.
  • Several funds in the same biotech cohort screen stronger overall, and some cost less: IBBQ at 0.19% and XBI at 0.35% versus SBIO's 0.50%.
  • Not an income vehicle. Whatever this fund does, it does through the share prices of the drug developers it holds.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
