BUFPBPGIM Laddered S&P 500 Buffer 12 ETF

SPBWCAllianzIM Buffer20 Allocation ETF

In short

BUFP Most buffer funds make you pick a start month and live with it. BUFP skips the choice: it owns twelve PGIM S&P 500 Buffer 12 ETFs, one per calendar month, so part of the ladder resets on a rolling basis.

SPBW Twelve AllianzIM Buffer20 funds in one ticker, one for each calendar month. Instead of picking a start date and living with its cap for a year, you hold a rolling ladder built on the S&P 500.

Stated mandate

BUFP The Fund seeks capital appreciation through U.S. large-cap equity exposure obtained via a laddered portfolio of twelve PGIM US Large-Cap Buffer 12 ETFs. The underlying ETFs seek limited downside protection and capped upside over a specified period, while the Fund itself has no stated buffer.

SPBW SPBW seeks capital appreciation with downside-risk mitigation by holding a roughly equal, laddered portfolio of twelve U.S. Equity Buffer20 ETFs. The underlying funds reference SPY and seek capped upside plus protection against the first 20% of SPY losses over one-year periods; SPBW itself has no stated buffer or cap.

Why people hold it

  • BUFP Twelve underlying buffer ETFs, one for each month, spread the entry point instead of locking everything to a single outcome period and a single cap.pgim.com
  • Each underlying ETF targets a buffer against the first 12% (before fees) of SPY's price-return losses over a one-year period, paired with an upside cap.pgim.com
  • A 0.50% fee sits well under the 0.79% typical of buffer peers, and the package ranks among the stronger implementations in that group.
  • SPBW One ticker holds twelve Buffer20 funds, one per month, each resetting its own buffer and cap on its own annual clock. No start-date roulette, no rolling it yourself.
  • The underlying funds are built to absorb the first 20% of the reference index's losses over each one-year period, in exchange for a capped upside.
  • A roughly equal-weight sleeve of the issuer's own monthly Buffer20 funds, all pointed at the S&P 500. What's on the tin is what's in the box.

Worth knowing

  • BUFP The wrapper itself has no stated buffer. PGIM notes it likely won't get the full benefit of the underlying buffers, and their caps limit its upside.pgim.com
  • Small and thinly traded, so spreads can run wider than at the category's giants. Matters most on larger orders.
  • Live since 2024, so the record is short. PSFF, the other fund-of-buffer-ETFs in the group, carries a lower fee.
  • SPBW At 0.79% it sits above the typical fee in its buffer-ladder group, and rival ladders such as PBFR (0.50%) charge less for a similar job.
  • The fund itself has no stated buffer or cap. Downside cushioning is a blend of twelve staggered periods, not a clean 20% floor at any one moment.
  • Launched in 2025 and thinly traded, so there's little history to judge and spreads can run wider than the category's heavyweights.
