YOLOCAdvisorShares Pure Cannabis ETF

In short

CNBS Cannabis, undiluted. CNBS runs a roughly 30-stock portfolio built on a purity test: holdings must earn at least half their revenue from the cannabis and hemp ecosystem. Trading since 2019, it's a concentrated take on the theme, not a broad basket.

YOLO Cannabis's original active fund. Since 2019 a manager, not an index, has picked a short list of names on both sides of the US-Canada border, under a purity test: at least half of a company's revenue must come from marijuana or hemp.

Stated mandate

CNBS The Fund seeks capital appreciation by investing in equity securities of companies engaged in cannabis and hemp-related activities. At least 80% of net assets is invested in companies deriving at least half of their revenue from the cannabis and hemp ecosystem.

YOLO The Fund seeks long-term capital appreciation.

Why people hold it

  • CNBS The purity rule is the whole point: at least 80% of assets go to companies earning half or more of their revenue from cannabis and hemp, so conglomerates with a side bet in the plant don't qualify.
  • About 30 names, which means each position actually moves the fund. A concentrated expression of the theme instead of a diluted sector sweep.
  • A plain 1940 Act fund operating since 2019: familiar ETF plumbing and 1099 tax reporting rather than a partnership K-1.
  • YOLO First US-listed active ETF with a dedicated cannabis mandate, trading since 2019. A manager picks the names instead of a rules-based index.prnewswire.com
  • The "pure" is contractual: 80% of assets must sit in companies earning at least half their net revenue from marijuana and hemp. No tobacco or fertilizer ride-alongs.advisorshares.com
  • Covers both sides of the border: exchange-listed cannabis equities plus US plant-touching exposure reached through an affiliated ETF and total return swaps.advisorshares.com
  • The 0.91% fee lands mid-pack for cannabis ETFs, under MJ (1.12%) and CNBS (1.09%).

Worth knowing

  • CNBS The 1.09% expense ratio sits above the cannabis-fund median, and well above cheaper shelf-mates like WEED at 0.41% and MSOS at 0.81%. You're paying up in this aisle.
  • It trades lighter than the category's most active funds, so bid-ask spreads can be wider and size can push the price around.
  • The mandate is capital appreciation. Income isn't part of the design, and the fund has not been making distributions.
  • YOLO Cheaper ways into the theme exist: WEED charges 0.41%, and sibling MSOS charges 0.81% for a US-only book.
  • Thinly traded, so bid-ask spreads can run wide and larger orders can move the price.
  • Concentrated by design: a couple dozen mid- and small-cap positions, non-diversified, with swap holdings adding counterparty exposure.advisorshares.com
