FENYAFidelity MSCI Energy Index ETF

LNGXDGlobal X U.S. Natural Gas ETF

In short

FENY One of the cheapest ways to own U.S. energy: 0.08% a year for roughly 110 energy stocks tracked through MSCI's full-market benchmark. No stock picking, no clever tilts, just the sector at cost.

LNGX A pure play on American natural gas: roughly 40 US producers and midstream operators that pull gas and NGLs out of the ground and move them. Broad energy funds bury that theme under oil majors. Launched in 2025.

Stated mandate

FENY Seeks investment returns that generally correspond, before fees and expenses, to the performance of the MSCI USA IMI Energy 25/50 Index. The fund invests at least 80% of assets in securities included in that index and uses representative sampling.

LNGX The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Global X U.S. Natural Gas Index. It uses an indexing approach and generally replicates an index of U.S.-listed and U.S.-domiciled companies involved in natural-gas and NGL upstream and midstream activities.

Why people hold it

  • FENY Costs 0.08% a year against a 0.45% median for broad energy funds. Only XLE matches it; VDE, IYE and ENFR all charge more.
  • Tracks MSCI's USA IMI energy benchmark, a full-market read on the sector, so the basket runs roughly 110 names deep rather than a short list.
  • Returns have lined up closely with the index it follows, and it trades actively. As implementations of broad energy go, this is one of the tidiest in the group.
  • Running since 2013, so it has a long record through both oil booms and busts, and Fidelity has kept it plain vanilla the whole way.
  • LNGX Gas, not generic "energy." The index holds US-listed, US-domiciled upstream and midstream natural gas and NGL companies, so refiners and oil majors don't dilute the theme.globalxetfs.com
  • Rules-based indexing rather than stock picking: it replicates the Global X U.S. Natural Gas Index, so the basket's job is spelled out in the prospectus.globalxetfs.com
  • About 40 names covering both ends of the chain: the drillers producing the gas and the midstream companies processing and shipping it.

Worth knowing

  • FENY One sector, one country. Oil and gas prices set the mood here, and the swings run wider than a total-market fund's.
  • The index weights by company size, so even with roughly 110 holdings a handful of giants carry most of the load.
  • Distributions land quarterly, not monthly, which matters if you are pacing income.
  • LNGX The 0.45% fee sits right at the broad-energy median, but the vanilla giants (XLE and FENY at 0.08%) cost a fraction. The narrower target carries a premium.
  • One fuel, one country. Gas prices, weather and pipeline economics swing this basket harder than a diversified energy fund would move.
  • It launched in late 2025, so the record is short, and small, lightly traded funds tend to show wider bid-ask spreads than the household-name energy trackers.
