FLMXBFranklin FTSE Mexico ETF

VNMDVanEck Vietnam ETF

In short

FLMX Mexico exposure at a discount. Franklin's tracker charges 0.19%, a fraction of what single-country emerging-market funds usually cost, and holds a compact basket of the country's largest listed companies.

VNM The US-listed pure play on Vietnam. Since 2009, VanEck has packed roughly 60 Vietnamese stocks into one ticker, with no broad emerging-market wrapper diluting the bet.

Stated mandate

FLMX The Fund seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Mexico Capped Index before fees and expenses through an indexing strategy, investing at least 80% of assets in index components or related exposure.

VNM The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MarketVectorTM Vietnam Local Index.

Why people hold it

  • FLMX At 0.19%, one of the cheapest wrappers for Mexican equities: well under the roughly 0.59% median in its single-country EM cohort, and under EWW's 0.50%.
  • Plain, rules-based mandate: it tracks the FTSE Mexico Capped Index, keeping at least 80% of assets in index components or related exposure. No manager guesswork.
  • The index is a capped one, which limits how much of the portfolio any single Mexican mega-cap can occupy.
  • Live since 2017 and, on our review, one of the stronger implementations among single-country emerging-market funds.
  • VNM Straight Vietnam, undiluted: the fund tracks the MarketVector Vietnam Local Index, an all-Vietnam equity benchmark, so the entire portfolio moves with that one market.
  • Live since 2009, a veteran by single-country emerging-market standards, and it trades actively enough that getting in and out is rarely the hard part.
  • Backed by VanEck with assets in the mid-size range, giving it the scale and shelf life that thinly held single-country products often lack.

Worth knowing

  • FLMX Thinly traded. Spreads can run wider than at the category's busiest funds, which adds to the real cost of getting in and out beyond the headline fee.
  • One country, roughly 40 stocks. Concentration is the point, but it means Mexican policy, oil and peso moves all land straight in a dollar-based return.
  • Income arrives quarterly, not monthly.
  • VNM At 0.66% a year, it prices above the typical single-country emerging-market fund, and far above budget peers in the group like FLMX at 0.19%.
  • About 60 stocks, one country, one currency. Vietnamese policy news and the dong swing this fund far harder than they would a diversified emerging-market holding.
  • Its results have followed the index less closely than most funds in its peer group, so what lands in your account can drift from the benchmark's headline figures.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
