GCALBGoldman Sachs Dynamic California Municipal Income ETF

SCMBASchwab Municipal Bond ETF

In short

GCAL Goldman's California-only muni fund: actively run rather than index-tracking, with a two-to-eight-year duration band and room for up to 30% junk-rated muni credit. It chases income exempt from both federal and California income tax.

SCMB Schwab's take on the core muni sleeve: three basis points, thousands of AMT-free bonds from across the country, and a monthly distribution. Bottom-of-the-table pricing, no frills attached.

Stated mandate

GCAL The Fund seeks a high level of current income exempt from regular federal income tax and California personal income tax.

SCMB The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of an index representing the U.S. AMT-free municipal bond market.

Why people hold it

  • GCAL Double tax-exempt by design: it targets income free of regular federal and California personal income tax, with at least 80% in qualifying munis as a shareholder-approved policy.sec.gov
  • Fee lands near the muni category median: 0.30% net of a waiver through December 29, 2026 (0.35% gross). VTEB (0.03%) and MUB (0.05%) cost less but skip the California exemption.
  • Genuinely active: duration can run two to eight years and up to 30% of assets may be non-investment-grade munis, so managers can dial credit and rate exposure up or down.sec.govsec.gov 2
  • Pays monthly and spreads across roughly 400 California positions, and it sits in the upper half of its muni peer group on our review.
  • SCMB Three basis points a year, against a 0.30% median for muni bond funds. Among the top-graded names in the category, only Vanguard's VTEB matches that fee.
  • Follows the ICE AMT-Free Core U.S. National Municipal Index across thousands of bonds and issuers, so no single borrower or state drives the portfolio.
  • Plain passive plumbing done well: it stays close to its index, trades actively, and pays monthly. One of the stronger implementations in the muni aisle.

Worth knowing

  • GCAL Single-state and non-diversified: California budget stress or one large local credit event bites harder here than in a national muni fund.sec.gov
  • Up to 100% of assets can be private activity bonds, whose income may be a preference item for the federal alternative minimum tax.sec.gov
  • Thinly traded next to the national muni giants, so spreads can run wider. The 0.30% net fee also leans on a waiver running to December 29, 2026.
  • SCMB Launched in 2022, so its live record is shorter than muni staples like MUB and VTEB, even though the strategy is the same broad-market idea.
  • Bond math still applies. This is a portfolio of municipal bonds, so share prices move opposite to interest rates.
  • National in scope, not single-state like NYF, so it is not built around any one state's tax rules.
