In short
IYY A 2000-vintage broad US equity fund, IYY packs roughly a thousand large- and mid-cap names into one ticker and hugs its index tightly. The trade-off: it charges several times what today's cheapest total-market wrappers do.
VTI The whole US stock market in one ticker: roughly 3,600 names, from mega caps down to micro caps, for three basis points. Vanguard has run this portfolio in ETF form since 2001, and it's grown into one of the largest funds anywhere.
Stated mandate
IYY The fund seeks to track the investment results of a broad-based index composed of U.S. equities, providing broad exposure to U.S. large- and mid-cap stocks.
VTI The fund aims to replicate the performance of a benchmark index that covers the entire U.S. stock market.
