SIXJBAllianzIM U.S. Equity 6 Month Buffer10 Jan/Jul ETF

In short

MART A March-reset buffer fund: it absorbs the first 10% of a year's drop in an S&P 500 ETF and caps the upside for that stretch in exchange. Standard recipe for the category, priced a shade under the typical rival.

SIXJ Most buffer ETFs lock you into a 12-month cycle. SIXJ runs a six-month one, resetting each January and July: it tracks SPY's share-price move, absorbs the first 10% of losses, and takes a fresh upside cap twice a year.

Stated mandate

MART The Fund seeks to provide downside-loss protection covering the first 10% of losses on its Underlying ETF, before fees and expenses.

SIXJ The Fund seeks to match the share-price return of SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust over a six-month outcome period, subject to an upside cap and protection against the first 10% of losses.

Why people hold it

  • MART The contract is legible: over each one-year period starting in March, the first 10% of the S&P 500 ETF's losses are absorbed before fees and expenses, with upside capped at a level set that March.
  • A 0.74% fee undercuts the typical S&P 500 buffer fund, which matters in a wrapper where the cushion is measured before fees and expenses.
  • No exotic reference: the fund tracks outcomes against the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, and the combination of plain benchmark and low fee puts it in the upper half of a crowded buffer cohort.
  • SIXJ The 10% buffer and the cap reset every January 1 and July 1, so terms refresh twice a year instead of on the usual annual clock.
  • 0.74% expense ratio, on the lean side for a defined-outcome fund and below the typical fee among its shallow-buffer peers.
  • The reference asset is SPY itself, the original S&P 500 ETF, so the payoff is keyed to a plain vanilla benchmark rather than a bespoke index.
  • Rates among the stronger implementations in a crowded shallow-buffer field, alongside AllianzIM's other six-month siblings like SIXZ and SIXD.

Worth knowing

  • MART Small asset base, light volume. Spreads can widen, so limit orders and a glance at intraday value matter more here than with a mega-cap index fund.
  • Buy mid-period and you inherit whatever buffer and cap are left, not the headline 10%. The design lines up cleanly only from one March reset to the next.
  • Income isn't part of the package; returns show up in price. Cheaper buffer builds exist in the same cohort, like PSFF at 0.10% and BUFP at 0.50%.
  • SIXJ Buffer and cap are designed to work over the full six-month period. Buy mid-period and you get whatever cushion and upside room remain at that moment.
  • It tracks SPY's share-price return, so dividends aren't passed through and the fund isn't structured to pay income.
  • Volume is light next to the largest buffer funds, so bid-ask spreads can run wider, especially in fast-moving markets.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
