SCMBASchwab Municipal Bond ETF

In short

RVNU Most muni ETFs buy whatever the tax-free market offers. RVNU takes one slice: revenue bonds behind things like water systems, toll roads and airports, indexed since 2013, for 0.15% a year.

SCMB Schwab's take on the core muni sleeve: three basis points, thousands of AMT-free bonds from across the country, and a monthly distribution. Bottom-of-the-table pricing, no frills attached.

Stated mandate

RVNU The Fund seeks investment results that generally correspond, before fees and expenses, to the Solactive Municipal Infrastructure Revenue Bond Index.

SCMB The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of an index representing the U.S. AMT-free municipal bond market.

Why people hold it

  • RVNU Charges 0.15% a year, about half the typical muni ETF fee, for a focused revenue-bond mandate instead of a broad tax-free index.
  • Pure play by design: its Solactive index points at municipal bonds repaid from project revenue rather than a state's general taxing power.
  • Pays monthly, spread across about 300 US municipal bonds inside a plain 1940-Act ETF wrapper.
  • Trading since 2013, long tenure for a niche muni strategy, and it lands in the upper half of its muni peer group.
  • SCMB Three basis points a year, against a 0.30% median for muni bond funds. Among the top-graded names in the category, only Vanguard's VTEB matches that fee.
  • Follows the ICE AMT-Free Core U.S. National Municipal Index across thousands of bonds and issuers, so no single borrower or state drives the portfolio.
  • Plain passive plumbing done well: it stays close to its index, trades actively, and pays monthly. One of the stronger implementations in the muni aisle.

Worth knowing

  • RVNU A smaller, thinly traded fund, so limit orders and patient fills matter more here than with muni giants like MUB or VTEB.
  • Broad muni index funds run near 0.03%. The extra cost here buys the infrastructure-revenue tilt, not wider coverage.
  • Revenue bonds lean on income from specific projects, so credit risk rides on how those systems perform rather than on a government's taxing power.
  • SCMB Launched in 2022, so its live record is shorter than muni staples like MUB and VTEB, even though the strategy is the same broad-market idea.
  • Bond math still applies. This is a portfolio of municipal bonds, so share prices move opposite to interest rates.
  • National in scope, not single-state like NYF, so it is not built around any one state's tax rules.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
