ETF.net Research

EBIZBGlobal X E-commerce ETF

IBUYBAmplify Online Retail ETF

In short

EBIZ EBIZ owns the whole e-commerce stack: the platforms, the software behind the checkout button, and the companies selling through it. Roughly 40 names, priced under the typical fee in its corner of the market.

IBUY The original online-retail bet. Since 2016, IBUY has tracked a global index of roughly 80 companies whose business is selling over the internet, rather than a US-only slice of the e-commerce theme.

Stated mandate

EBIZ The fund invests in companies positioned to benefit from wider e-commerce adoption, including businesses operating e-commerce platforms, providing related software or services, or selling goods and services online.

IBUY The fund seeks investment results that generally correspond, before fees and expenses, to the price and yield of the EQM Online Retail Index.

Why people hold it

  • EBIZ At 0.50% a year it comes in under its e-commerce cohort's median fee, and below peers like IBUY (0.65%) and ONLN (0.58%).
  • The mandate reaches past online retailers to platform operators and the software and services running the transactions.globalxetfs.com
  • About 40 holdings keeps the theme undiluted: this isn't a broad tech index wearing an e-commerce label.
  • Trading since 2018, and one of the stronger implementations in its e-commerce peer group.
  • IBUY One of the first funds built purely around online retail, running since 2016. It has a track record through a full boom-and-bust cycle in the theme.
  • Global mandate, roughly 80 names. You get overseas marketplaces alongside US sellers instead of a handful of domestic mega-caps.amplifyetfs.com
  • Tight fit to the label: it follows the EQM Online Retail Index and lands in the upper half of ETF.net's e-commerce peer group.amplifyetfs.com

Worth knowing

  • EBIZ Small and thinly traded, which usually means wider bid-ask spreads and more slippage on larger orders.
  • Distributions arrive once or twice a year, so the payout is a trickle rather than a stream.
  • One theme, about 40 names: sector swings and single-stock stumbles land harder here than in a diversified fund.
  • IBUY 0.65% a year sits at the middle of the e-commerce pack and above cheaper rivals like ONLN (0.58%) and EBIZ (0.50%).
  • A smaller, lightly traded fund. Spreads can be wider than the category's giants, so the price you see may not be the price you get on big orders.
  • One narrow theme, and income is not the point: distributions come at most a couple of times a year.
