XLYAState Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF

In short

ITB Launched in 2006, right at the top of the housing boom, ITB is the long-running pure play on American homebuilding: roughly 40 US stocks tracking one home construction index, with no global detours.

XLY Live since 1998 as one of the original Select Sector SPDRs, XLY bundles the S&P 500's spending-money stocks (cars, couches, burgers, online carts) into one heavily traded ticker at eight basis points.

Stated mandate

ITB Seeks to track an index of U.S. equities focused on the home construction sector.

XLY The fund seeks to track the performance of the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector Index, providing targeted exposure to companies in the consumer discretionary sector.

Why people hold it

  • ITB Undiluted exposure by design: about 40 US names tracking the Dow Jones U.S. Select Home Construction Index, rather than a broad consumer basket where builders are a rounding error.ishares.com
  • Trading since 2006, so this fund has a live track record through multiple full housing cycles instead of a back-test.
  • A billion-dollar-plus fund that trades actively, which is why it has long been the default vehicle when investors want a housing position in one ticker.
  • XLY Charges 0.08% a year, a fraction of the roughly 0.35% typical for consumer discretionary funds, and tied for the cheapest in its peer group.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund and one of the most actively traded in the category, which generally shows up as tight bid-ask spreads for buyers and sellers.
  • Plain mandate: S&P 500 consumer discretionary members, with capping rules that stop any single company from swallowing the index. Pays quarterly.spglobal.com
  • Trading since December 1998 as one of the first US sector funds, and it still stands among the strongest implementations in its peer group.

Worth knowing

  • ITB Costs 0.37% a year, a touch above the typical fund in its consumer discretionary peer group, and broad sector options like XLY and FDIS run 0.08%.
  • Roughly 40 stocks in one cyclical industry: the ride is bumpier than a diversified sector fund, and mortgage-rate news hits this basket hard in both directions.ishares.com
  • US-only, and built for share-price exposure to homebuilding, not income. Distributions arrive quarterly.
  • XLY About 50 stocks. Even with the index caps, a small handful of megacaps drives most of the movement.spglobal.com
  • S&P 500 members only, so smaller retailers and restaurant chains sit outside the index entirely.spglobal.com
  • One sector, and a cyclical one: discretionary spending rises and falls with the economy, and the fund is classified as non-diversified.sec.govbritannica.com
