AUMIBThemes Gold Miners ETF

GDXJBVanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF

In short

AUMI Gold miners with the blends stripped out. AUMI tracks an index of roughly 30 large miners that must earn at least 90% of revenue from gold, and it charges less than the typical fund in its group.

GDXJ The junior tier of the gold trade. GDXJ tracks an index of small-cap gold and silver miners, about 120 names worldwide, and has done so since 2009. It owns the up-and-comers rather than the household-name majors.

Stated mandate

AUMI The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, an index of companies active in the gold mining industry. It uses a passive/indexing approach to pursue that objective.

GDXJ GDXJ seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS Global Junior Gold Miners Index, which represents small-capitalization companies primarily engaged in gold and/or silver mining.

Why people hold it

  • AUMI The "pure" in the index name is a rule: members must generate at least 90% of revenue from gold mining, so copper-and-gold conglomerates and diversified diggers stay out.solactive.comthemesetfs.com
  • A 0.35% fee undercuts the peer-group median and the category's household names, VanEck's GDX (0.51%) and iShares' RING (0.39%).
  • Roughly 30 names, free-float weighted, rebuilt on a set schedule: a concentrated, rules-based way to own the diggers rather than the metal.solactive.com
  • GDXJ Small by design: the index covers companies primarily engaged in gold and/or silver mining at the small-capitalization end, roughly 120 of them across global markets.
  • Silver rides along. The mandate covers gold and/or silver miners, so the basket is broader precious metals than the name suggests.
  • One of the busiest tickets in the junior-miner niche: a multi-billion-dollar fund that trades very actively, which matters when the whole sector moves at once.
  • 0.52% a year sits right at the median for precious-metals miner funds, and roughly the same sticker as VanEck's large-cap sibling GDX at 0.51%.

Worth knowing

  • AUMI Thinly traded and small next to the group's giants, so bid-ask spreads can be wider and big orders can push the price.
  • Concentrated by design and non-diversified: about 30 miners, one commodity, plus mine-level risks like costs, permits and politics.themesetfs.com
  • Launched in December 2023, so the live track record is short, and cash comes back once or twice a year rather than monthly.
  • GDXJ Junior miners are the jumpy end of a jumpy sector: smaller companies, fewer mines, and moves that can run far wider than the metal itself.
  • Income is not the story here. Distributions land once or twice a year at most.
  • Average price, not a bargain. Cheaper miner funds exist in the group, including RING at 0.39%.
