COLODGlobal X MSCI Colombia ETF

FLMXBFranklin FTSE Mexico ETF

In short

COLO Colombia, in one ticker. Running since 2009, COLO tracks an MSCI index of roughly two dozen Colombian stocks with capping rules that stop any single issuer from swallowing the fund. Concentrated by design, not by accident.

FLMX Mexico exposure at a discount. Franklin's tracker charges 0.19%, a fraction of what single-country emerging-market funds usually cost, and holds a compact basket of the country's largest listed companies.

Stated mandate

COLO COLO seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MSCI All Colombia Select 25/50 Index.

FLMX The Fund seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Mexico Capped Index before fees and expenses through an indexing strategy, investing at least 80% of assets in index components or related exposure.

Why people hold it

  • COLO A pure Colombia play with history behind it: listed since 2009 and still tracking the country's equity market by holding the index itself.globalxetfs.com
  • The benchmark applies MSCI's 25/50 capping rules, a guardrail on how far one issuer can stretch inside a basket of roughly two dozen names.globalxetfs.com
  • No manager guesswork: it is passively run and fully replicates the index, and the adviser does not take defensive positions when the market falls.sec.gov
  • FLMX At 0.19%, one of the cheapest wrappers for Mexican equities: well under the roughly 0.59% median in its single-country EM cohort, and under EWW's 0.50%.
  • Plain, rules-based mandate: it tracks the FTSE Mexico Capped Index, keeping at least 80% of assets in index components or related exposure. No manager guesswork.
  • The index is a capped one, which limits how much of the portfolio any single Mexican mega-cap can occupy.
  • Live since 2017 and, on our review, one of the stronger implementations among single-country emerging-market funds.

Worth knowing

  • COLO At 0.62% a year it runs above the 0.59% median for single-country emerging market funds, and far above the cheapest of them (FLMX charges 0.19%).
  • One country, a couple dozen stocks, and officially non-diversified: single-name, peso and political swings land with full force here.globalxetfs.com
  • Assets are modest and trading is moderate by ETF standards, which usually means wider spreads than the giants of the single-country shelf.
  • FLMX Thinly traded. Spreads can run wider than at the category's busiest funds, which adds to the real cost of getting in and out beyond the headline fee.
  • One country, roughly 40 stocks. Concentration is the point, but it means Mexican policy, oil and peso moves all land straight in a dollar-based return.
  • Income arrives quarterly, not monthly.
