NBSDDNeuberger Berman Short Duration Income ETF

SHAGBWisdomTree Yield Enhanced U.S. Short-Term Aggregate Bond Fund

In short

NBSD A 1986 mutual fund that swapped into an ETF wrapper in 2024: same team, same mandate. It hunts the highest current income it can find in investment-grade bonds while holding duration to three years or less, and pays monthly.

SHAG Short-duration bonds with a twist: SHAG follows an index that reshuffles the short-term investment-grade universe toward its higher-yielding corners, and charges 0.12% a year to do it.

Stated mandate

NBSD The fund seeks the highest available current income while maintaining liquidity and limiting principal risk; total return is secondary. It invests at least 80% of net assets in investment-grade fixed- and floating-rate debt and normally targets average portfolio duration of three years or less.

SHAG The fund seeks to follow, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg U.S. Short Aggregate Enhanced Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  • NBSD Not a startup strategy. It ran as the Neuberger Berman Short Duration Bond Fund from 1986 and converted into this ETF in June 2024, carrying over the portfolio and the record.nb.comsec.gov
  • The three-year duration target is written into the mandate, along with at least 80% investment grade, so rate moves push it around less than a core aggregate bond fund.
  • Roughly 1,100 fixed and floating rate positions, US and overseas, keep any single issuer small. Income lands monthly.
  • SHAG The whole idea in one line: an index built to reweight short-term investment-grade bonds toward the higher-yielding corners of that same universe, not just mirror the market's shape.
  • 0.12% a year, well under the typical fee in its bond-fund cohort.
  • Roughly 1,400 bonds and monthly distributions, so the yield tilt is spread across a wide book rather than a handful of names.
  • Short maturities by mandate, which means less interest-rate sensitivity than a full-maturity Agg fund carries.

Worth knowing

  • NBSD The 0.42% fee sits above the typical charge in its bond cohort. JPLD measures against the same 1-3 year government/credit index for 0.24%, and index agg funds like BND run 0.03%.
  • Income comes first by design and total return is secondary. Short duration also means smaller price moves than long bonds when yields swing.
  • Active picks across credit and floating rate debt can land either side of the plain 1-3 year benchmark, and the ETF's own trading history only starts in 2024.
  • SHAG A small fund that trades thinly. Spreads can widen at the edges of the session, and small funds carry more closure risk than category giants.
  • Reaching for yield inside investment grade means leaning on its lower-rated, longer-dated slices, so it can behave differently from a plain short-term Agg tracker.
  • Core bond staples like BND and SCHZ run at 0.03%. The extra cost here buys the yield tilt and the short maturity profile, not broader market coverage.
